Arnold Schwarzenegger talked with POLITICO’s Isaac Dovere on Sunday, March 11, 2018, about his own principles for effective governing, why he made gerrymandering and other issues his crusades after finishing as governor of California, and what he sees for the future of American politics.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has lived the American dream. Born in Austria in 1947, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1968, won five Mr. Universe and seven Mr. Olympia titles, and earned a college degree. His Hollywood career is legendary. Though his most iconic role is the Terminator, his many films include “Predator,” “Twins,” and “True Lies,” and have grossed more than $3 billion. In 2003, Schwarzenegger made a historic run for governor of California, won two terms and ushered in an era of innovation. He made California a world leader on renewable energy and climate change, set a revolutionary reform agenda, and invested in infrastructure.
Since leaving office, he’s led the fight against partisan gerrymandering and climate change, boosted after-school programs, and advocated healthy living.
Edward-Isaac Dovere is the chief Washington correspondent for POLITICO and host of its podcast, Off Message. He started his career covering New York politics, and since 2011 has reported on U.S. and international politics from Riyadh and Cedar Rapids, from New Hampshire and Hiroshima. His work has been recognized by the New York Press Club and Society of Professional Journalists and is the winner of the 2017 Merriman Smith Award from the White House Correspondents Association.
