In support of Material Control, their first LP in 15 years, Glassjaw co-headlined with NY post-hardcore luminaries Quicksand.

This Tuesday, July 24th, The Mohawk Club on Red River Ave in Austin hosted two of the progenitors of the Post-Hardcore movement of the 1990’s, Quicksand and Glassjaw. These two bands who have been pillars of the underground punk scene, have had a massive influence on the modern musical landscape and finally have hit the road together, performing co-headlining sets to legions of loyal punk fans.

Up first was Glassjaw, launching into Cut And Run, a song from their most recent album, Material Control. Almost instantly the crowd was whipped into a frenzy, moshing and crowd-surfing as the band fed them crowd-pleasing hits such as Mu Empire, Tip Your Bartender, New White Extremity, and Jesus Glue. While guitarist Justin Beck and relative newcomers Travis Sykes and Chad Hasty are all prolific musicians, the intensity of their performance stems from singer Daryl Palumbo as he thrashes onstage to anthems like You Think You’re (John F***ing Lennon).

Closing out the evening was Quicksand, a veritable who’s who of the subversive Punk counter-culture. Though three of the four members have returned for the tour, it is a touchstone of old-school Punk sensibilities (being founded by members of Gorilla Biscuits, Youth Of Today, and Burn, including future members of Deftones) with a more progressive sensibility. Launching out on the song Head To The Wall, the band entranced the packed house of the Mohawk. Quicksand jammed through a plethora of fan favorites such as Illuminate, Cosmonauts, Dine Alone, and Lie And Wait before finally closing out the night on their seminal hit, Delusional.

Michael Mullenix
Growing up around the world, Michael developed a taste and appreciation for all styles of music. While studying film making at Boston University, he dove headfirst into a mosh-pit and never came out. It was in Boston that he combined his love of film and photography with his drive and passion for being a chronicler of the underground music scene. After graduation he headed to Los Angeles and for over a decade has worked with some of the top musicians and actors in the entertainment industry. Lured to Austin by the cultural explosion in the music and film scenes taking place there, he relocated two years ago and describes Austin as a cultural Shang Ri La!
