Mumford & Sons stomp through Austin’s race track

Mumford & Sons made stops 13 and 14 of their current Summer Stampede Tour at the Austin 360 Ampthitheater.  On both June 8 and 9, 2013, they performed to a sold out audience with opening acts from Michael Kiwanuka and Mystery Jets.  An estimated 14,000 music fans filled the outdoor venue for each of the Saturday and Sunday night performances.

“We wanted to do something unashamed,” says Ben Lovett. “We’re confident and happy to be where we are as a band — everything that’s happened with us has exceeded expectations, and it’s all been a surprise, it’s all much bigger than what we were prepared for…’

British folk heroes Mumford & Sons use bluegrass and folk instrumentation, such as a banjo, upright bass, mandolin, and piano.  Their songs are played with a rhythmic style based in both alternative rock and folk.  Much of Mumford & Sons‘ lyrical content has a strong literary influence, its debut album name, ‘Sigh No More,’ was derived from William Shakespeare’s ‘Much Ado About Nothing’.

It was a stomper of a show.  The Grammy Awards winning quartet, composed of main Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane, lit up the massive crowd from the stroke of 9 pm, and for close to two hours, Mumford & Sons played a lengthy set and made Austin their own public stomping ground.  A show highlight came during their encore, when they performed two acoustics songs to a completely silent crowd.  It is pretty amazing to see such a huge venue so quiet as the quartet performed Bruce Springsteen’s ‘I’m on Fire.’

Openers Mystery Jets, a more rock-driven type of indie folk band, and British soul musician Michael Kiwanuka, are the tour’s openers.  Both bands set the stage nicely for an evening that went without a hitch.  Mumford & Sons is kicking off Austin’s 2013 summer concert season with a bang.
