On April 26, 2013, The Lumineers performed for the second time this month in the city of Austin, Texas. Fresh following their KLRU-TV taping (Austin PBS) at Austin City Limits on April 16th, they returned to the music capital of the world to perform again at Austin 360 Amphitheater. Even if you don’t know The Lumineers, you know at least one of their huge hit singles. “Ho Hey” became a commercial success and was a breakthrough hit for the band since it Billboard debut June 2012. If that is the only song you have heard, you are missing out on some great music.

The Lumineers, a folk rock band some might compare to Mumford and Sons & Monsters and Men, is comprised of five musicians. Two founding members and childhood friends Wesley Keith Schultz (lead vocals and guitar) and Jeremiah Fraites (drums, percussion), teamed up with cellist Neyla Pekarek, pianist Stelth Ulvang and bassist Ben Wahamaki. The Denver quintet blends American roots music and heart-swelling stomp-and-clap acoustic rock, pop, and folk. Drummer Fraites has admitted that “anyone with an instrument can play a Lumineers song”, however, there is no denying their apace success. They have become a top concert attraction despite offering a very low-key performance in terms of production or theatrics. Instead, The Lumineers let the music speak for itself.
Following thirty minute sets by each Jack Wilson and Sam Doores + Riley Downing and the Tumbleweeds, The Lumineers burst on to their simply designed stage lighted by enormous chandeliers and performed for seventy-five minutes to an upbeat Austin audience. The crowd stomped, danced, and sang along for most of the night. A noticeable highlight was when Neyla Pekarek joined Schultz to perform their sassy new track titled “Duet” which is planned for their upcoming record.
Front man Wesley Schultz thanked the crowd for its support and Austin cheered as he announced “this is the biggest sold out venue we have ever played!” During their encore, the five-piece asked everyone to put away their phones and cameras as they stepped offstage to perform a few tracks deep into the crowd of the orchestra section of the Austin 360 Amphitheater. All night, The Lumineers appeared humble and grateful, as if they’re just enjoying themselves and taking in every minute of this crazy ride.
