Saturday, May 29th, Texas natives Blue Water Highway brought their blend of Americana, Country, and Folk to the Haute Spot in Cedar Park for an unforgettable night. When the lights went down the band made their way onstage where singer Zack Kibodeaux started singing the slow-rising Paper Airplanes. Aside from being the titular track to the latest album, it also served as a mark of the group’s newer and more introspective direction as musicians. Songs like Sign Language, Grateful, and Dog Days were perfect reflections of where the band’s more tempered and thoughtful mindset had led them. I say this recognizing the crowd seemed more responsive to their older fair like the bewitching Speaking Of The Devil, or the epic John Henry (no pun intended, but I’ll take it). The contrast in the band’s career was evident and leads to many a discussion on how to properly pigeon-hold them. Their earlier output was Americana tinged with some bluegrass, while their newer selection seems more recognizably Country laced with a hint of folk. This range ultimately makes for an interesting evening to behold for any self-respecting audiophile, and the band balances their set well so that lighter entries like Best Friend compliment a more reflective Council Grove. At the end of the evening, the band treated the crowd to an Eagle’s cover of Take It To The Limit before concluding on an old crowd-pleaser, Medicine Man.
