Wednesday night at the Alamo City Music Hall in San Antonio, Australian quintet Hands Like Houses took over for a night of high octane Rock! Touring for the past month the recently released album, Anon, the band used this night to assert themselves to an energized Texas audience and prove themselves in the headlining slot. As the lights dimmed for the final time of the evening, Hands Like Houses took the stage and built up the anticipation before launching into their hit, New Romantics. From there the band was in their element and pouring through fan favorites like No Parallels, Colourblind, and Perspectives. Of course, a sizeable amount of time was dedicated to the material from the new album with standouts in the form of the heavy yet soulful song Tilt, the experimental rhythms of Overthinking, and punk-laced rock anthem of Monster. What really hits me about Hands Like Houses is how elusive it is to pin down a core style for them. Though on the heavier side they never feel confined to wade into the more soulful ballad of A Tale Of Outer Suburbia or the grunge-fueled fight-song found in Bad Dream. Ultimately the band brought the evening to a close with the defining opus, I am.
