King Diamond’s 2024 tour, titled Saint Lucifer’s Hospital 1920, Kicked off in October and ran through December with the final performance in Dallas. The tour combined horror-inspired storytelling with unparalleled musical craftsmanship.
The stage show is a standout spectacle. Featuring hauntingly elaborate sets themed as a gothic mental asylum, complete with eerie lighting and props, the production immerses metal fans in a living ghost story. King Diamond’s commanding presence is central to the experience, as his iconic falsetto and dramatic storytelling lyrics bring to life classics like “Welcome Home” and “Abigail.” Clad in his signature black and white attire with face paint that amplified his haunting presence. His microphone, a macabre cross made of bones, further embodied the dark aesthetic theme of the night. Theatrical elements such as a staged “sacrifice” and morbid characters, including grandma and the sinister Abigail, add layers to the narrative-driven performance.
King Diamond is supported by a stellar lineup. Guitarists Andy LaRocque and Mike Wead entranced the audience with intricate harmonies and soaring solos, while Pontus Egberg on bass and Matt Thompson on drums created a powerful rhythmic foundation. Myrkur on keyboards also provided beautifully chilling backing vocals that were a perfect complement to the band and King’s voice. The band’s technical precision complements the dramatic visuals, ensuring every riff and beat enhances the eerie atmosphere. Tracks from Abigail and Them received particularly enthusiastic responses, as did newer material that seamlessly integrated into the show’s horror concept.
The concert reached its peak with the encore performance of the iconic “Abigail,” which left the crowd electrified. The combination of King Diamond’s emotive delivery and the audience’s passiontate response highlighted the deep connection between King Diamond and his fans. Opening acts Night Demon and the legendary band Overkill brought a tremendous amount of energy, building anticipation for King Diamond.
