Kicking off the weekend on Friday, April 20th, Texas Pop-Punk vanguards Bowling For Soup arrived at the 3Ten Club in Austin to a packed, sold-out show. After the lights went down in the house, the four-piece band from Denton came to the stage… and immediately got side-tracked joking and having fun with the crowd. Amusingly, the band is self-aware about this, and singer Jaret Reddick even made the comment after about 3 minutes of no music: “That Bowling For Soup is really great, I wonder if they sing any songs? The answer is no, no they do not.” At this point the band jumped into their first hit of the night, The Bitch Song! One part Improv comedy and the other part actual collection of the band’s 24 year discography, they managed to cover fan-favorites such as Almost, Ohio (Come Back To Texas), Punk Rock 101, High School Never Ends and Shut-Up And Smile. Of course, after so many songs the band would take the time to indulge some shenanigans like a free t-shirt giveaway and one point even started swapping breath mints (gross, I know) that I actually provided for Jaret upon request (I have now crossed the journalistic line into making the story). Other funny moments came when the band played their cover of Stacie’s Mom and explained how this only existed because for years people mistook it for their song. Finally the night came to a close on the encores of 1985 and Girl All The Bad Guys Want.
