The weekend kicked off in a rocking way with the dual headlining sets of 90’s Alternative Rock staples, Sister Hazel and Everclear, at the HEB Center’s Drive-In concert season.
First up, it was Sister Hazel’s chance to serenade the tailgating crowd with an hour-long set. Often overlooked, Sister Hazel had an upbeat performance that set the tone for the fun and different vibe of the event. Of course, their fans were excited to sing along with All For You and Swan Dive, but it is a whole new experience seeing families cook-out in the parking lot while taking in this show.
Afterward, it was Everclear’s turn in the spotlight to amp up an excited crowd who began swaying as soon as they heard the opening to So Much For The Afterglow. From there the crowd was treated to a packed setlist of the band’s nearly 30-year history including Heroin Girl, Father Of Mine, and Everything To Everyone. The band has an unmistakable charm to them, centered primarily around the charisma and sometimes self-deprecating humor of lead singer Art Alexakis. Plenty of times he would take a pause in between songs to joke with members of the audience, talk about his kids, and especially thank everyone who supported his recent social media outreach in a feature he called The Pool Party. And the audience was rewarded tenfold with interesting selections that aren’t always performed live such as White Men In Black Suits, The Twistinside, and Local God. Ultimately the night concluded on the undeniable hits of Buy You A New Life and Santa Monica, leaving fans cheering from the roofs of their trucks!
