On Friday, October 9th, Skillet returned to Austin for the first of two socially-distanced nights of intense hard rock at the H-E-B Center. The parking lot was filled with tailgaters when the lot lights went down and Jen Ledger came out onstage, greeting the crowd as she climbed behind her drum set. She wasted no time starting off the intro to “Feel Invincible” as the rest of the band grabbed their guitars and joined her.
The crowd was ecstatic and began singing along as the band played through hits such as “You Ain’t Ready,” “Back From The Dead,” “Victorious,” and “Monster.” A special moment was observed before the band played “Hero,” noting the tough year we all have been through and the need to support each other from self-destructive behavior.
Skillet’s set was dynamic, flooded with lights, rising platforms for guitarists Korey Cooper and Seth Morrison, a guest cellist, and some amazing dual smoke canons for singer and bassist John Cooper to shoot out into the crowd.
At the end of fan-favorite “Rebirthing,” the band exited the stage, only to be summoned back by honking horns, the tail-gating equivalent of stomping feet, and calls for “One More Song!” The lights once again filled the stage as the band welcomed the crowd to “The Resistance,” the final smash of the night!
