Metallica’s ‘World-Wired’ tour stopped in San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday night, June 14, at a capacity Alamodome marking the band’s first performance in the River City since 2009. Touring behind their already platinum-selling album ‘Hardwired…to Self-Destruct’, Metallica delivered a career spanning set that spanned 18 tracks and over 2 hours, beginning with the title track and setting the tone for the evening. The trademark ‘M’ and ‘A’ bookended both ends of the stage with multiple skyscraping LED screens in between playing video throughout the set. Fans from all over packed the Alamodome from the ‘snake pit’ to the top of the rafters. First time 10 year old concert goers stood beside life-long tattooed Metallica enthusiasts, fists thrust high into the air.

Amidst the frenetic pace of the evening, Metallica made sure San Antonio knew they were family with vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield noting that the people in San Antonio “like the heavy stuff.” A highlight of the evening was bassist Robert Trujillo’s tribute to the band’s original bass player, the late Cliff Burton. The tribute drew a roaring ovation. As expected, the evening drew to a close with ‘Enter Sandman.’ As a fan, I couldn’t imagine anyone left the Alamodome with an ounce of disappointment, only wishing that drummer Lars Ulrich was still flailing like a madman and throwing the quartet into yet another song. Metallica continues their ‘World Wired’ trek with direct support from Avenged Sevenfold (who had an amazing performance in their own right) throughout the summer.
