The sixth-annual SXSW Gaming Awards took place at the Hilton Hotel in Austin, Texas on Saturday, March 16, 2019. Lindsay Jones, voiceover artist with Rooster Teeth, and Alex Corea, with production company Super Creative, hosted the show which recognized newer up-and-coming games and some which are much more mainstream.
The SXSW Gaming Awards present a unique opportunity to be recognized by thousands of gaming fans and industry pros during the SXSW Gaming Festival. Since its premiere at SXSW 2014, the Gaming Awards have quickly grown. While the awards primarily celebrate video games, tabletop and board games are also represented. The ceremony features 25 unique awards categories, dedicated to both AAA and indie gaming.
Rockstar Games’ “Red Dead Redemption 2” and Santa Monica Studios “God of War” each took home three awards, with “God of War” winning Video Game of the Year. “Fortnite” took the ‘Most Promising Esports Game’ and ‘Excellence in Multiplayer’ awards. “Detroit Become Human” won ‘Excellence in Narrative,’ and ‘Excellence in Gameplay’ went to “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.”

Matthew Crump Cultural Innovation Award: Celeste
Awarded to the game that best challenges the “norm” of everyday gaming and offers a culturally innovative view of a game world, character, or gameplay.
Excellence in Musical Score: Tetris Effect
Awarded to the game that best exemplifies artistic excellence in musical score and how it progresses the narrative of the game.
Excellence in Design: God of War
Awarded to the game with the best overall design concept and best execution.
Most Promising New Intellectual Property: Beat Saber
Awarded to a new property that risked creating something fresh and that excelled within its genre or category for the year.
Most Evolved Game: No Man’s Sky NEXT
Awarded to the game that was enhanced with the best additional content after its original release.
Most Promising New Esports Game: Fortnite
Awarded to the online game that has the best competitive scene, or potential to grow one, and most entertainment value.
Most Fulfilling Community-Funded Game: CrossCode
Awarded to the game that was primarily produced via crowdfunding platforms and had excelled beyond the expectations set before it.
Gamer’s Voice Tabletop Game: Tsukuyumi: Full Moon Down
Awarded to the best indie tabletop game as voted by SXSW Gaming attendees.
