Country Music was in the air in Cedar Park on Thursday, August 19th as Tyler Farr brought his blend of wild times to the Haute Spot in Cedar Park. The lights dimmed as the band prepared the stage for Farr’s arrival on the song Whiskey In The Water, a bold move launching on one of the top hits of his musical catalog that would have easily closed the night years ago. Farr’s Country is filled with small towns, usually populated by sweet girls best remembered through Rose-colored glasses. Especially prominent on newer songs like Soundtrack To A Small Town Sundown, Only Truck In Town or even the fresh single Cover Girl, that all have this whimsical look at sweet moments of yesteryear. These are then interrupted by fist-pumping anthems like C.O.U.N.T.R.Y. or Redneck Crazy. It is interesting to watch Farr’s career get a second wind, and almost completely revive since moving to independent artist status, but deciding how he endures in the Nashville landscape will take some time. He seems to balance the sentimental nostalgic hits of his setlist with his ball-cap Bro-Country aesthetic, and it’s a tug of war for where the true nature of his music ultimately resides. Still though, under the night sky in North Austin, listening to great sing-alongs like Damn Good Friends and Suffer In Peace make for a powerful memory. At the end of the night, a cheering crowd was sent home happy with the undisputed gem of his repertoire, A Guy Walks Into A Bar.

Michael Mullenix
Growing up around the world, Michael developed a taste and appreciation for all styles of music. While studying film making at Boston University, he dove headfirst into a mosh-pit and never came out. It was in Boston that he combined his love of film and photography with his drive and passion for being a chronicler of the underground music scene. After graduation he headed to Los Angeles and for over a decade has worked with some of the top musicians and actors in the entertainment industry. Lured to Austin by the cultural explosion in the music and film scenes taking place there, he relocated two years ago and describes Austin as a cultural Shang Ri La!
